NZJeMA wrote to the Otago Medical Research Foundation to express concern about medical research organizations becoming involved in highly contentious international political issues outside their core expertise.

Protecting institutional focus

Medical research organizations are entrusted to advance health and scientific knowledge. NZJeMA's statement argued that engaging in polarizing political debates unrelated to that mission can affect credibility, perceived objectivity, and public trust—particularly where members and communities hold a wide range of views.

Expertise has boundaries

Knowledge in healthcare or medical research does not automatically provide authority on complex geopolitical conflicts. Specialization is fundamental to modern medicine, and institutions risk diluting their mission when they move too far into areas beyond their mandate.

NZJeMA's request

The statement urged the Foundation, and comparable organizations, to prioritize the support of vital medical research rather than hosting or promoting highly divisive international discussions where relevant expertise is absent.

Keeping medical research focused on its core purpose helps protect public trust, scientific integrity, and professional cohesion.
