We are shocked and heartbroken by the horrific mass shooting at the Bondi Beach Hanukkah celebration in Sydney on 14 December 2025. Fifteen innocent people were murdered during a peaceful Jewish holiday celebration. The violence is rooted in hatred and is a predictable consequence of widespread antisemitic propaganda. This tragedy is no longer a surprise and serves as a painful warning that the escalation of antisemitism in New Zealand could have tragic consequences. Even in Australasia we are not immune.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and the Australian Jewish community. We condemn antisemitism unequivocally, reaffirm our commitment to protecting community wellbeing and confronting hate.
We applaud the heroism of Ahmed Al Ahmed who risked his life to stop the shooter.
We call upon all New Zealanders to denounce antisemitic acts and statements when they occur.
